Resistance (Ilyon Chronicles) by Jaye L. Knight
I’ll let the author speak for herself.
“Could God ever love a half-blood all of society looks upon with such fear and disdain? Jace once believed so, but when a tragic loss shatters the only peace he’s ever known, his faith crumbles as the nagging doubts he’s tried to put behind him descend on his grieving heart. With them come the haunting memories of the bloodstained past he longs to forget, but can never escape.
Taken from home at a young age and raised to serve the emperor, Kyrin Altair lives every day under a dangerous pretense of loyalty. After her unique observation skills and perfect memory place her into direct service to the emperor, Kyrin finds herself in further jeopardy as it becomes increasingly difficult to hide her belief in Elôm, the one true God.
Following the emperor’s declaration to enforce the worship of false gods under the penalty of death, many lives are endangered. But there are those willing to risk everything to take a stand and offer aid to the persecuted. With their lives traveling paths they never could have imagined, Jace and Kyrin must fight to overcome their own fears and conflicts with society as they become part of the resistance. “
This book would technically be put in the Medieval Fantasy genre. Fantasy can be a tricky thing, but this book is free from magic or sorcery of any kind. It is simply a fictional medieval story set in a fictional place about fictional people.
It is so good! I can’t even begin to tell you. . . I enjoyed this book so much!
The action was enough to keep me turning pages, the characters were so real I wanted to hug each of them and rescue them from their predicaments. Flashes of humor showed through and made me chuckle despite the danger and bravado.
The story follows the stories of Jace and Kyrin and their family and friends through the terrible trials that assail them.
Kyrin is a loveable, normal girl. In a world of unrealistic leading ladies, this girl was a refreshing break. She struggled, she fought, but God reigns in her life. I found myself relating to her in many ways and cheering her on.
Jace is a broken young man who has a hard time moving past the rejection and unloving that has pervaded his previous life. He has a hard time accepting God (or King Elom in the books) grace, and loving and accepting himself.
The myriad of other characters had me cheering, from Sam, Kyrin’s twin brother Kaden, Rayad, Trev, Lady Anne and Trask. The characters are so real and I loved reading all about them.
I am so impressed with this book and the clarity and just awesome job she did writing it! Jaye L. Knight has inspired me in my writing as well as added to my reading pleasure.
I can tell you the ending was satisfying, but at the same time, I can’t wait to read the sequel. This is a book I will treasure on my bookshelf. There were several moments I wasn’t breathing and I couldn’t stop turning pages! I have a love for medieval and fantasy type stories, but most authors I have found who write in that genre, take the fantasy to the extreme or the stories are really dark and I tend to stop before I have gotten a chapter in. This book made me so happy! The Christian message throughout was so effortless, delightful, and encouraging. I am already planning to read it again!
